About GRAVELBIKE
I ride bicycles. On pavement, on dirt, and of course, on gravel.
In short, I “ride everything.”
I am no stranger to this type of riding. Many years ago I edited and published a paper ‘zine called crosswords. After that I contributed to Bicycle Guide, Bicycle Retailer & Industry News, California Bicyclist, and MTB/Mountain Biker magazine.
Thanks for your birthday wishes.
Best of luck with your new blog. Looks like we have some common interests, so I look forward to following your efforts on the bike, and in the blogosphere!
Cool blog! Just stumbled across it as I was exploring the world of bikes. I’ve had this ~85 mile route in my head for years (80%gravel, 15%pave, 5%jeep trail) and want to share it. Any tips on making this into a race? Casper, WY.
You might check with Guitar Ted @ Gravel Grinder to see if he has any recommendations on organizing a race.
Adam, email the folks at https://www.carbonandgrit.com. They are based out of Ohio and might be a good resource. Cheers! Mark
I’m in the Toronto, Canada area and looking for gravel races. Do you know of any in Michigan or Upstate New York or Pennsylvania?
I enjoy the BLOG!
Cheers!
Hi there.
If you’re looking for events/races, check out
Great blog. I have grown weary of the road bike scene and my singletrack days are behind me. If I listen real hard, I can hear the gravel and dirt roads of my youth inviting me back. I have this idea festering in the back of my mind about riding from Castle Rock to Durango on backroads The less the pavement, the better. I’m going to build a rigid hard tail 650b set up similar to an adventure bike. Not sure if I’m going to use a bob or bags. I’ll keep you posted on my progress. Happy miles!
I think it’s very interesting that we ride everything when we’re young, and then as we get old (wiser?), the desire to explore the unpaved returns.
The gravel brings the kid out! Anybody know of any gravel events in NY state? I am now on the hunt!
BTW, Jeremiah Bishop’s Alpine Loop Gran Fondo in Harrisonburg, VA was my gateway drug into this thing. Epic ride, with a great group of riders having a blast, very well organized, with smile-inducing wonder greeting you mile after mile.
Did you ever make this ride, John? Would like to hear about it. From CR to Woodland Park is possible using Rampart Range Rd, but from there to Durango looks pretty daunting. Which route were you thinkin’? Realizing this post is 4 years old…
Why call them gravel bikes, why not just bitchin. I ride where I want, when I want and directly. That’s how I ride.
Where in Colorado do you ride/live? I’ll be moving to Colorado Springs in a few months and hope the trails around there are as amazing as the photos you post.
Live in Superior, work in Boulder. Much of my riding takes place in between.

Am tired of the CX thing and love riding dirt. Want to get into the gravel grinder thing. Thanks for some cool vibe found here.
Remember Vermont when you are planning some amazing dirt/gravel road riding. There are more miles of dirt roads than paved! Its a beautiful thing!
Love your blog and glad to see more people are enjoying what I discovered long ago in CO – gravel roads are a wonderful alternative to single track and pavement! First gravel bike was a Stumpjumper frankenbike. Then added a Dean CX to the stable. Regularly will take various mountain bikes out and my latest addition, a Soma Saga. No such thing as a “perfect” bike as all have their pro’s and con’s, but all are fun!
Can anyone point me in the right direction of an affordable but yet decent Cyclocross (gravel bike) with the 2,000 dollar range being my limit? And I’m not interested in Carbon frames.
Do you want a complete bike, or would you rather start from the frame and build it up?
2015 Cannondale CAADX SRAM Rival Disc…. just what the doctor ordered… pondering one myself. 🙂

You might laugh (because of the brand) but I just bought one and it’s a great gravel bike for the money. Diamondback Haanjo Carbon Comp. got it on sale for 1700.
That’s an incredibly versatile bike. DB really did their homework.
